What this document is

Also known as: opening with a passport · sin DNI

The DNI is Argentina's national identity document. Residents have one; a newly arrived foreigner usually will not for months. The accounts below open on other documents instead — normally a passport plus a tax identifier, and sometimes a residencia precaria.

How to get it

  1. 01Request a CUIL or CDI from ANSES with your passport — this is the identifier most providers ask for in place of a DNI.
  2. 02If you have filed for residency, collect the residencia precaria from Migraciones; several banks accept it as proof of status.
  3. 03Open the account with passport + CUIL, in-app where the provider supports remote onboarding, at a branch where it does not.

What it will not get you

A CUIL is not a DNI. It identifies you for tax and social security; it does not prove residency. Local credit lines, some brokerage products and most state benefits still require the DNI itself.

Where this applies

These requirements are Argentine. Opening an account in the EU turns on residence and licensing instead — see the country guides.

FAQ

Can a foreigner open a bank account in Argentina without a DNI?
Yes — 11 accounts in our directory open without a DNI, usually with a passport plus a CUIL/CDI or precaria.
What is a CUIL and how do I get one?
A CUIL is a tax ID issued by ANSES; foreigners can request one with a passport. Many accounts accept it instead of a DNI.
Which document should I get first?
The CUIL or CDI. Nearly every account that accepts foreigners asks for one, it is issued on a passport alone, and it does not depend on your residency file being accepted.
Will I have to redo this once my DNI arrives?
Usually not for the account itself, but update the document on file — some providers raise limits or unlock credit products once a DNI is registered.
