What this document is
Also known as: residencia precaria · certificado de residencia precaria
A residencia precaria is the certificate Migraciones issues while a residency application is being processed. It is time-limited and renewable, and it is the closest thing to proof of legal status a foreigner holds before the DNI arrives.
How to get it
- 01File your residency application with the Dirección Nacional de Migraciones.
- 02Download the precaria from the RaDEX system once the file is accepted.
- 03Renew it before it expires — an expired precaria is refused at the counter as often as a missing one.
What it will not get you
It is a status certificate, not an identity document. Providers that accept it still ask for a CUIL, and a precaria that has lapsed is worth nothing at onboarding.

FAQ
- Can a foreigner open a bank account in Argentina without a DNI?
- Yes — 7 accounts in our directory open without a DNI, usually with a passport plus a CUIL/CDI or precaria.
- What is a CUIL and how do I get one?
- A CUIL is a tax ID issued by ANSES; foreigners can request one with a passport. Many accounts accept it instead of a DNI.
- Which document should I get first?
- The CUIL or CDI. Nearly every account that accepts foreigners asks for one, it is issued on a passport alone, and it does not depend on your residency file being accepted.
- Will I have to redo this once my DNI arrives?
- Usually not for the account itself, but update the document on file — some providers raise limits or unlock credit products once a DNI is registered.
